Dichorionic and Monochorionic Twins Pregnancy

Degree of separation from Wiki

Various types of chorionicity and amniosity (how the baby’s sac looks) in monozygotic (one egg/identical) twins as a result of when the fertilized egg divides

The degree of separation of the twins in utero depends on if and when they split into two zygotes. Dizygotic twins were always two zygotes. Monozygotic twins split into two zygotes at some time very early in the pregnancy. The timing of this separation determines the chorionicity and amniocity (the number of sacs) of the pregnancy. Dichorionic twins either never divided (i.e.: were dizygotic) or they divided within the first 4 days. Monoamnionic twins divide after the first week.

In very rare cases, twins become conjoined twins. Furthermore, there can be various degrees of shared environment of twins in the womb, potentially leading to pregnancy complications.

It is a common misconception that two placentas means twins are dizygotic (non-identical). But if monozygotic twins separate early enough, the arrangement of sacs and placentas in utero is indistinguishable from dizygotic twins.

Type Description Day
Dichorionic-Diamniotic Normally, twins have two separate (di- being a numerical prefix for two) chorions and amniotic sacs, termed Dichorionic-Diamniotic or “DiDi”. It occurs in almost all cases of dizygotic twins (except in very rare cases of fusion between their blastocysts[29] ), in 99.7% of all pregnancies,[30] and in 18–36%[31] (or around 25%[29]) of monozygotic (identical) twins.DiDi twins have the lowest mortality risk at about 9 percent, although that is still significantly higher than that of singletons.[32] Dichorionic-Diamniotic twins form when splitting takes place by the third day after fertilization.[29]
Monochorionic-Diamniotic Monochorionic twins share the same placenta.Monochorionic twins generally have two amniotic sacs (called Monochorionic-Diamniotic “MoDi”), which occurs in 60–70% of the pregnancies with monozygotic twins.[31] Monochorionic-Diamniotic twins are almost always monozygotic, with a few exceptions where the blastocysts have fused.[29] Days 4-8
Monochorionic-Monoamniotic Sometimes, monochorionic twins also share the same amnion. This situation occurs in 1–2% of monozygotic twin pregnancies.[31]Monoamniotic twins are always monozygotic (identical twins).[33]

The survival rate for monoamniotic twins is somewhere between 50%[33] to 60%.[34]

Consequently, if twins are monoamniotic that means that the two babies will be sharing a placenta and as a result, due to the small capacity of sharing a sac, the umbilical cord has an increased chance of being tangled around the babies. Because of this, there is an increased chance that the newborns may be miscarried or suffer from cerebral palsy due to the lack of oxygen.

Monoamniotic twins occur when the split takes place after the ninth day after fertilization.[29]
Conjoined twins When the division of the developing zygote into 2 embryos occurs, 99% of the time it is within 8 days of fertilization.

Mortality is highest for conjoined twins due to the many complications resulting from shared organs.

If the division of the zygote occurs later than the 12 days then conjoined twins are usually the result.

Wow..this is something I should know earlier…

As a new mom,its learning by mistake usually the best mechanism to perfection myself as a mom. And as the oldest in my family, Amni was the first baby arrived after the last 20 years, that ensure some problem of remembering the do & dont’s and so other. Still, we manage to learn by our mistake. Thanks to modern technologies, there are a few changes in baby essentials that helps new mothers like me. :)

Who would have thought that they have created a very useful nasal aspirator that helps parents from having to suck mucus out directly from their baby’s nose? Yes, its true that they have created that nasal bulb to solve this ‘eeuuggrh’ problem. But wont work as it claims and as the time flies (since your baby wont have flu problem every month), the bulb itself will harden and you will end up throwing it away..What a waste! Personally, this revolution is a must have for every mom, it is useful but also do the tricks well..

Kenapa TERUK sgt servis dkt klinik kerajaan???

As a government servant, Ibu selalu dengar orang komplen pasal servis kakitangan kerajaan. Macam2 la orang cakap, servis lambat la..sambil lewa la..buat keja terkedek2 la.. Tp hari ni ibu pun nak komplen pasal isu klinik kerajaan yang buat kerja dan cakap macam orang nyanyuk (tak kirala Doktor ke nurse.Sama jer bengong..)

Its all started ms ibu mula-mula bukak buku untuk twins ibu. Sebab memang dah tau renyahnya kerja dan masa yang diambil utk rutine check every month. Utk twin ni,ibu bukak buku dah agak lambat. Rsnya masa tu twins dah 4 bulan kut..

Lambat.Terkedek-kedek.Tapi mesra. Tu secara ringkas boleh ibu describe ttg pengalaman ibu bukak buku. And one thing i discover that day was, they tend to put the blame on you when anything goes wrong during the process. Kalau kita kena tunggu lama (when i said lama, i really mean lama ok..What do you think when you were ask to wait for almost 2 hours for your giliran and suddenly you saw a lady buat muka bodo potong que dengan letak kad dia atas kad you masa nurse you kelam kabut buat kerja lain??) then diaorang boleh salahkan you sebab tak sabar menunggu????Bodooohhh sangatttt!!!

So then for my second appointment, Ibu was to buzy and terlupa tarikh. After tau yang baby twin (sbb scan dkt swasta ek?Nak harapkan klinik kerajaan ampun la..tah pukul brapa baru boleh settle que..) ibu pun pegi la klinik and inform them. Macam bodoh (again..sigh!),diaorang treat me as if there was noting to be worried.Cuma one of the nurse (Nurse J) said something like this :

“You kena kawal makan you. Satu hari you cuma boleh makan ikan sekor and nasi one senduk.Banyakkan makan sayur..Itula menu sihat untuk pregnant mommy..

And ibu is like

Why??Does my HB too low or too high?  Ke I ada kencing manis?Did i gain weight yang keterlaluan becoz i’m pregnant with twin you see (tah dah berapa kali mention tau bab twin ni, dah terasa macam over excited plak..)

And she said

nope. just langkah2 mengawal permakanan..

So ibu nodded and sekat my permakanan like she said and end up losing weight more than gaining as i suppose too..Sigh!!Stupid la that old nurse…And when i discover (after a fwen yang pernah mengandung kembar ty why my sticker kaler hijau, and not kuning a sign for twin pregnancy) and told them today for 100 times about having twin prenancy, she told something that make my eyes rolled..

You kena makan ikan 8 ekor sehari. 4 untuk siang dan 4 untuk malam..You kena igt yang you makan untuk 2 orang..

What the F**K!!!??Aritu kata kena diet..Ni kena makan banyak2?Pastu komplen HB aku rendah…Macam Banganggg!!! aritu kata sekor sehari..ni sroh makan 8 ekor?Ingat aku ni kucing parsi??

And that was the beginning of my emotion swing today…And after berjumpa dengan a few nurses and a Doctor yang almost menyebabkan ibu hilang pertimbangan, ibu nak declare loudly..

THEY ARE SO STUPID AND SO BANGANG AND PEOPLE LIKE THIS YANG MENYEBABKAN SEMUA KAKITANGAN KERAJAAN DICOP MAKAN GAJI BUTA…

*Kalaula ibu terjumpa kertas aduan pelanggan tadi, memang berkajang2 la aku adukan…Biar satu klinik kena!!

STUPID LIKE HELL!!!

The baby now weighs nearly 1.5 pounds/ 660 grams and is approximately 13.5 inches/ 35 centimeters long from crown to heel. He makes breathing movements but has no air in his lungs yet. At 26 weeks, fetal brain scans show response to touch. If you shine a light on your abdomen, your baby will turn his head, which according to researchers, means his optic nerve is working.
